India has reported a reduction in the magnitude of greenhouse gas emissions and GDP emissions. India News – Times of India

New Delhi: India’s overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fell by 7.93 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, according to data submitted to the United Nations Office on Climate Change.
The country’s emissions intensity, the greenhouse gas emissions per unit of GDP, declined by 36 percent between 2005 and 2020, according to the fourth biennial update report of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). BUR-4) is highlighted.
Excluding land use, land use change, and deforestation (LULUCF), India’s emissions stood at 2,959 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) in 2020. Including LULUCF, emissions were 2,437 MtCO2e, showing a significant decrease compared to the previous year.
Nevertheless, emissions have almost doubled, reaching 98.34 percent since 1994.

Doubling growth from emissions

India has made progress in doubling economic growth from GHG emissions. Between 2005 and 2020, the country’s GDP emissions intensity decreased by 36 percent, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable development.
As of October 2024, non-fossil fuel sources accounted for 46.52 percent of the country’s electricity generation capacity. India’s climate targets under the Paris Agreement include reducing emissions intensity of GDP by 45% by 2030 (from 2005 levels) and achieving 50% of gross installed capacity from non-fossil fuel energy sources by 2030. Includes doing.
India also plans to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5–3 billion tonnes by 2030 through forests and tree cover. Between 2005 and 2021, the country established a carbon sink of 2.29 billion tonnes.

Sector wise emissions

In 2020, the energy sector was the largest contributor to India’s emissions at 75.66 percent, followed by agriculture (13.72 percent), industrial process and product use (IPPU) (8.06 percent) and waste (2.56 percent). The LULUCF sector acted as a net carbon sink, reducing net national emissions by 2,436,656 gigagrams of carbon dioxide equivalent (GgCO2e).
India’s main sources of emissions include carbon dioxide from fossil fuel combustion, methane from livestock and emissions associated with aluminum and cement production.
Although India accounts for 18% of the global population, its annual per capita primary energy consumption in 2022 was 25.4 gigajoules (GJ), significantly lower than the global average of 78 GJ per person. High-income countries use an average of 119 GJ, while the US uses 277 GJ per person.
The report emphasizes that to meet its development goals, India must substantially increase its energy consumption while maintaining its commitment to climate action.
