Fans can now watch deleted scenes from the film, which is now available in digital formats on multiple streaming and rental platforms.
One particular scene, titled The promise of the alphabethas been doing the rounds on the internet and has created a stir among fans.
In the scene, Glinda is talking about a previous moment when Elphaba urged Fierro to help free the lion cub from their classroom.
“I would have helped you, if you needed someone, you could have picked me,” Glinda asks. To which Alphaba replied, “I’m sorry, it was a mistake, I won’t leave you behind again.”
Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their outrage over the cutting of an “important” scene from the film.
“Why did they delete it so important?” one user questioned, while another said, “OMG we got robbed, they should have kept this scene.”
A third user added, “It literally makes no sense why they deleted it?!?! It adds so much depth to their friendship.”
Earlier, during an interview with hustle and bustledirector Jon M. Cho explained why he chose to remove the scene.
“The problem for us was that when Elphaba makes a promise to Glinda, it takes away the drama of waiting for the promise to come true,” he revealed.
He clarified that the scene was cut to preserve the element of surprise in the story.
“When you get to the train scene, if she’s already made that promise, Alphabet is a person of her word, so she’s going to invite him. Without her, I think you Don’t know at all [her intentions]”
Chu was also concerned about the length of the film, which was already two and a half hours long.
“The film was long. It’s still long, and I tried to do my due diligence to make it as thin as I could but knowing that we needed those pieces.”
The wicked It has grossed $432.9 million at the domestic box office and $643 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all time.
The film has also received four Golden Globes nominations so far and has been suggested for Oscar nominations.
