What is Babybel?



Babybel is a brand of cheese produced by the Bel Group, a multinational French cheese company. What most people only think of as Babybel is actually called a Mini Babybel, a snack-sized portion originally sold as a large cheese. Each small wheel has a soft, colored wax coating that can be easily opened for eating. Babybel is 69% fat and a good source of calcium.

What is Babybel?

Babybel is known for its characteristic packaging, featuring silver dollar-shaped cheese wheels dipped in colored wax. The original Babybel, a 380 gram wheel, was first produced in France in 1952. In 1977, the first Mini Babybel, recognized by the company and brand name, was produced.

In the United States, Babybel is manufactured in factories in Kentucky and North Dakota. Mini Babybel can be found in supermarkets and convenience stores in North America, Europe, Australia and other countries. Bell Group also produces Laughing Cow, a processed cheese spread.

How is Babybel made?

Raw cow’s milk is heated and pasteurized in large vats. Starter cultures are added to lower the pH of milk and give it its distinctive flavor. Next, Vegetarian rant Milk is added to coagulate. The curd is cut, stirred, and squeezed into small wheels, then pressed. They are aged briefly to reach the correct pH, then soaked in salty brine, which hardens each wheel.
