UK weather 2024: five things you need to know


The end of November was marked by a short but significant cold snap, bringing the first significant snowfall of the season to parts of the UK from Scotland to Devon.

Temperatures fell below -10C in some areas of northern Scotland, including Braemar in Aberdeenshire, which recorded a low of -11.2C, the coldest November night since 1998.

After a while, the weather turned extremely wet and windy Storm Brit brought its worst effects to South Wales. The River Taff burst its banks at Pontypridd, causing severe flooding, with more than 150mm (6in) recorded between 23–24 November.

Less than two weeks later, Cyclone Daragh arrived, causing widespread damage and disruption. Meteorological department released. A rare red warning for wind before the storm.

Landslides affected much of the UK, with winds exceeding 90 mph (145 km/h) on the Welsh and Devon coasts. At one point, 200,000 homes across the UK lost power.According to the Energy Networks Association.

As 2024 approaches and we move into 2025, the weather remains unsettled, with some potentially wet and fluctuating conditions likely to be interrupted.
