Britain has halted decisions on Syrian refugees after the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said “the situation is moving very quickly after the fall of the Assad regime” and some people are returning to Syria after recent developments.
The Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allied rebel factions captured the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday after years of civil war.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has welcomed the end of Assad’s “brutal regime” in Syria and called for the restoration of “peace and stability”.
Germany, France and Sweden are among the countries that have also blocked all pending asylum applications from Syrians, while Austria has indicated it will soon deport refugees.
Millions of Syrians have fled the country since the civil war began in 2011, when Assad brutally crushed a pro-democracy uprising.
