President-elect Donald Trump said. Richard “Rick” Grinnell, His former acting director of national intelligence, a “fantastic person” and “a star” in response to news that he may be serving as special envoy to Iran.
Reuters reported. that Trump was considering appointing Grenell to the post, citing “two people familiar with the transition plans.”
“He’s definitely in the running,” a person familiar with the discussions told the outlet on condition of anonymity. However, Grinnell said the report is “founded.”
Trump shared the Reuters report on Truth Social on Wednesday night. Although he did not confirm or deny the information in the article, he wrote, “Richard Grinnell is a wonderful person, a star. He will be high, somewhere!”

Grenell shared a link to the Reuters article on his X account on Wednesday evening and denied the information presented.
“Wrong. Again,” he wrote. “I hope there’s a real editor somewhere at @writers doing journalism. It’s made up.”
Grenell had previously been rumored to be a candidate for various positions in Trump’s second term, including secretary of state before Senator Marco Rubio was appointed and Russia Special Envoy for Ukraine Conflict Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg was selected before retiring.

Whoever is chosen for the Iran post will be responsible for “developing, coordinating and implementing the State Department’s Iran policy,” according to the job description.
The person will report directly to Rubio — assuming the Senate approves his nomination.

Grenell has been a Trump’s staunch ally Since his first presidential term and often during the 2024 election campaign, he has appeared to show his support for the now president-elect.
