Extreme cold conditions affect our eyes, especially when humidity is low, causing dryness.
Our eyes are very sensitive organs and they keep changing due to environmental conditions. Stiffness, dryness, and allergies are common symptoms in hot weather. In the same way, extreme cold also affects our eyes, especially when the humidity is low, causing dryness. In contact lens wearers, this effect is even more pronounced. Hence eye care is very important during the winter months.
Dr K Harsha, Head Clinical Services, Dr Aggarwals Eye Hospital, Bengaluru shares some simple tips to follow during winters if you wear contact lenses:
- Stay hydratedIt is important to be well hydrated. Try to drink six to eight glasses of water each day. Hydration helps prevent dry eyes and maintains the moisture balance in your eyes.
- Keep the eyes coolAvoid excessive exposure in dry and windy weather. You can prevent irritation and keep the eyes moist by using lubricating eye drops.
- Reduce contact lens wear time.During the winter, try to keep your contact lens wear time to a minimum. It can reduce discomfort and dryness. If possible, replace contact lenses with UV protective glasses.
- The type of contact lens material also plays an important role.Choose silicone hydrogel lenses that help prevent water evaporation from the eye and thus retain moisture.
- Maintain good contact lens hygieneWhen handling and cleaning your lenses, always follow recommended procedures. Make sure your contact lens case is cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis.
- Use a humidifierUsing a humidifier in your home or office can help add moisture to the air, making your eyes less likely to dry out and irritate them.
- Applying warm compressesUsing a warm compress on your eyes on a regular basis can help relieve dryness and retain moisture. This is especially helpful if you spend a lot of time wearing contact lenses.
