The Welsh Ambulance Service announced a major incident.


The Welsh Ambulance Service has described the incident as critical due to increased demand on the 999 service and delays in handovers to hospital.

It said more than 340 calls across Wales were waiting to be answered when the fatal incident was announced on Monday evening.

In addition, more than half of the trust’s ambulances were waiting outside hospitals to hand over patients.

The service is urging the public to only call 999 for serious emergencies as some patients wait several hours for an ambulance.

The trust said it had taken additional measures to ensure it could continue to provide the service to the public.

Trust chief Stephen Sheldon said the public can help in a life-threatening emergency by simply calling 999.

“It’s a heart attack, chest pain or difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, suffocation, or catastrophic bleeding,” Mr. Sheldon added.

The service is advising the public to visit the NHS 111 Wales website or consult a GP, pharmacist, and minor injuries unit for health advice.

The service describes this situation as “very rare”.
