WASHINGTON: The US Senate on Tuesday confirmed the promotion of Army Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue, the commander in Afghanistan during the US withdrawal, after a Republican senator narrowly blocked it.

Senator Marquin Mullen blocked Donahue’s nomination to become a four-star general and top commander of US forces in Europe.

President-elect Donald Trump and his allies have condemned the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in 2021 and vowed to take action against those responsible. During his successful re-election campaign, Trump said in August that he would seek the resignation of any senior official who “touched on the destruction of Afghanistan.”
