LONDON: The UK government on Friday launched the biggest reform of Britain’s sick social care system in decades, aimed at helping thousands of people struggling to care for elderly, ill or disabled relatives. are doing

Several past bids by various governments to shake up a system that has been woefully underfunded for years and overwhelmed by rising demand have failed.

But Health Secretary Wes Streeting said he was confident long-term reforms would be a “triumph of hope over experience”.

“We are trying to break this cycle of failure and build a new national consensus on social care, with cross-party negotiations starting next month,” he told the Press Association.

However, Stretting warned that the creation of a National Care Service — which he compared to the creation of the National Health Service in 1948 — would take time.

And it highlighted how the cost of caring for the country’s elderly is set to double over the next 20 years due to its growing population.
