The roof of the bus exploded after hitting the railway bridge.

The bus crashed into the bridge at Cook Street.

A double-decker bus has crashed into a railway bridge in Glasgow city centre, tearing off its roof.

The 4A first bus slid under the bridge at Cook Street at its junction with Commerce Street at around 18:00.

Police and ambulance personnel are at the scene. Firefighters were also dispatched but have now left the area.

Spike Turner, a passenger who was third in front of the bus, said the driver had taken a wrong turn and “crashed straight into the bridge”.

The street is one-way and the bridge, near the O2 Academy, is located just after a bend – although clearly marked for vehicles under 3.8 meters (12.5 feet).

After traveling in the wrong direction, the bus fell under the railway bridge

Mr Turner said: “I was fine, the lady in front of me was probably concussed. The bridge itself wasn’t high enough to hit anyone on the head but the exterior of the bus was burnt down.

“The guy in the front seat was in really bad shape. He’s got a lot of blood and a lot of bruises on his head.”

The first bus said it was aware of multiple injuries and that one person had been taken to hospital.

A spokesman said: “We have immediately launched an investigation and are assisting Police Scotland with their enquiries.”

ScotRail has closed several lines due to the crash.

Train services between Glasgow Central and Ardrossan Harbour, Ayr, Largs, Gourock, Wemyss Bay and Paisley Canal will be cancelled, delayed or revised, a spokesman said.

Several police vehicles under a railway bridge. The area has been taped off following the bus accident.

Police have sealed several roads.

Police have sealed off Cook Street to Center Street, Commerce Street to Wallace Street and Salkild Street to Cook Street.

A force spokesman urged drivers to avoid the area.

Network Rail and the Scottish Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.

In May last year, 10 people were taken to hospital. A bus collided with the same railway bridge.
