The name of the Elizabeth Line railway worker killed in the attack has been given.

An Elizabeth line worker who died after being attacked at an east London station was “the most loving person”, his family have said.

Jorge Ortega, 61, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after British Transport Police (BTP) officers were called to reports of a serious assault at Ilford station at around 20:50 GMT on Wednesday. He died on Friday.

A family tribute described Mr Ortega as “a kind soul you may have the pleasure of meeting”.

Ayodele Jamgbadi, 28, of Kingston Road, Ilford, was charged with grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident.

The tribute added: “Anyone who has met our father or worked with him over the years will tell you that.

“He was an amazing family man and always put other people first. He loved his grandchildren, and in turn, they loved our dad.

“He was totally devoted to our mother and loved her more than words could describe.

“After 38 years together, they are an example of what a great man should be and a role model we look up to.

“We can only hope to be like him. Dad is in our hearts and always will be.”

BTP has said it will amend the indictment to reflect Mr Ortega’s death.

The RMT union said Mr Ortega, who was one of its members, worked as a customer experience assistant for MTREL, which operates the Elizabeth line.

General secretary Mick Lynch said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of our member, who was killed in an attack while at work.

“The whole union extends its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at this terrible time and the thoughts of everyone at the RMT are with him.

“We will be closely monitoring the legal proceedings and will comment further at the appropriate time.”

MTREL said Mr Ortega was a “dedicated member of the railway community” for 24 years.

Mike Bagshaw, managing director of the transport operator, said: “This is an unimaginable loss, and my heart goes out to his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.

“He was a valued member of our team, serving the railway community with dedication and kindness for over two decades.

“We are devastated that such a senseless act of violence has claimed the life of one of our colleagues.

“He lost his life simply doing his job, everyone has a right to feel safe and secure at work and this tragic incident should serve as a stark reminder of the unacceptable abuse suffered by fellow rail workers. is.”

Andy Lord, London’s transport commissioner, said: “This is a horrific attack as our colleague is doing his job to help customers travel across London.

“Everyone should be able to go about their day without fear or intimidation and it is unthinkable that someone should lose their life to unprovoked violence while doing their job.

“The safety and well-being of our colleagues is paramount, and we are fully supporting British Transport Police in their investigation.”

DCI Paul Atwell said specialist Family Liaison Officers are assisting the victim’s family.

He said: “This was a horrific and tragic incident which resulted in the loss of one person’s life.

“I want to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident.”

Mr Jamgbadi appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Friday and was remanded in custody.

He is also charged with possession of a prohibited offensive weapon in a private place.

He is due to appear at Inner London Crown Court on January 7.
