KARACHI / ISLAMABAD: In a sigh of relief for the people of Karachi, Majlis Wahdat Muslimeen (MWM) ended the week-long sit-in in various parts of the provincial capital and other parts of the country.
In a statement issued late on Wednesday, MWM Chairman Allama Raja Nasir Abbas said that a peace agreement had been signed between the rival tribes of Karam after a grand jirga was held in Kohat. He announced the end of sit-ins across the country and said that the peace agreement was reached with the consent of the warring tribes. “The ball is now in the government’s court to implement the agreement,” the MWM chief added.
The development came hours after a 14-point peace accord was signed between the two warring tribes in Karam to bring peace to the district. Speaking to Geo News, MWMKP chapter president Shabbir Sajdi announced that it has been decided to end the sit-ins across the country except Parachinar. He said that the ongoing sit-in outside the Peshawar Press Club has also been ended.
Referring to the Parachinar protest, Sajdi said that the dharna would continue till the roads in the peaceful area were reopened and essential items were delivered.
He asked the government to ensure restoration of normalcy in Parachinar as negotiations have been completed.
Earlier, the MWM chief linked the call-off of his protest sit-ins in Karachi to the opening of roads leading to the restive Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to normal traffic. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Senator Nasir criticized the provincial government led by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, with whom the MWM is still allied, saying: “The closure of the roads leading to Parachinar is being done by the provincial government. is a failure.”
He blamed the KPK Chief Minister for blocking the roads leading to the violence-hit district. “The KP government has not cooperated with us so far,” he admitted.
Expressing satisfaction over the peace agreement brokered by the Jirga, the senator said that the tribal elders fulfilled their responsibility. He hoped that the peace accord would be implemented in its true spirit.
