The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to take strict action against those responsible for the attack on Karam Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud, terming it as a violation of the recently signed peace accord between rival tribes in the district.
This decision was taken during an emergency meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, in which the situation after the Bagan firing incident was considered. The meeting was attended by the chief secretary and police chief of the province and other officials.
This commitment of the provincial government has come a few hours after the deputy commissioner of Karam was injured in a firing incident in Bagan area.
Apart from the DC, six others were injured, including a Frontier Constabulary, a policeman and four passers-by, district administration officials said.
The deputy commissioner, who played a key role in efforts to restore peace in the troubled area, and others were rushed to the hospital soon after the attack.
In a meeting late tonight, it was concluded that local residents are responsible for the incident and have violated the peace agreement.
The authorities decided that those involved in the firing incident will be immediately arrested, FIRs will be registered against them.
A bounty will be announced to ensure the elimination of terrorists.
Underscoring their determination to maintain law and order in the troubled areas, top provincial officials also vowed that there would be no leniency with the attackers or their accomplices.
Karma violence
Karam has been in the spotlight for months now as continued violence in the district has claimed more than 130 lives and left scores injured, with a peace deal finally reached on January 1 after nearly 50 days of talks between tribal elders. It was settled.
The warring parties in Karam district had agreed on 14 points with the help of the Grand Jirga, including the handover of private weapons to the government and dismantling of bunkers.
It was hoped that the deal would hold as the violence forced the government to block the Talparachinar road, leading to shortages of food, medicine and other essential items in the district.
In the aftermath of the firing, Barrister Saif, who is also the adviser to the KP Chief Minister (CM), said that convoys of trucks carrying relief supplies to the district were stopped for the time being.
He also said that the condition of the Deputy Commissioner is out of danger and he is being shifted to Peshawar by helicopter for further medical assistance.
