Amid growing tension, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has given the current government a deadline of December 8 to pass the madrassa registration bill as the religious affairs minister is expected to pass it. Asked for more time. Legal form
His remarks came at a time when President Asif Ali Zardari earlier this week returned the madrassa registration bill to the Prime Minister’s Office, citing legal objections.
Addressing a function at Madrasa Jamia Osmania in Nowshera, KP, the JUIF chief said that they want to stay within their boundaries and do not want a clash with the state.
Expressing his displeasure at distinguishing between ancient and modern learning, he said: “Knowledge is knowledge.”
He said that all religious madrassas have been kept “under pressure”.
So-called reforms were being imposed on the madrasas in the name of bringing the madrasas into the national mainstream.
“You declared war on us, we didn’t.”
In response to a question, the JUI(F) leader said that the government is pushing Madrasahs towards extremism and fundamentalism.
He said that he will not consider the objections regarding Madrasahs in any way.
The JUIF leader added that we will not hand over any more madrasas to the government.
In a statement today, Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Chaudhry Salik Hussain said that the registration of madrasas was a long-standing need.
“It will take some time to legalize the madrasah registration bill,” the minister said, adding that this does not mean that the entire madrasa registration process is being stopped.
He said that accepting Maulana’s demand, the government approved the bill from both houses of parliament.
“Madrassas are also educational institutions that come under the Ministry of Education only.”
The minister said: “18,000 madrasas are registered with the Directorate General of Religious Education.”
The Directorate General had a one-window operation to facilitate the registration process.
