The Prime Minister has vowed not to choose one of Britain’s allies in a speech on foreign policy.
Attacking the Conservatives for “turning their backs on the world”, Sir Keir Starmer said his government would instead strengthen ties with both the US and the EU.
Sir Kerr also stressed the current “dangerous times”, saying stability is essential to progress, so Britain must continue to support Ukraine against Russia as “a random, increasingly desperate aggressor”.
He added: “There is no development without security – and no security without unity.”
Speaking at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet at London’s Guildhall, which is hosted by the City of London Corporation and where prime ministers traditionally discuss international issues, Sir Keir said Britain was now ” How will it stand globally”.
“Against the backdrop of these perilous times, the idea that we must choose between our allies, that we must somehow side with the United States or Europe, is patently false,” he said.
“I absolutely reject it. Attlee did not choose between allies. Churchill did not choose.
“The national interest requires that we both work together.”
Sir Kiir said he told President-elect Donald Trump when they met in New York in September that the UK would invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with its American friends in the coming years.
He reiterated his commitment to “rebuild our relationship with Europe as well”.
Sir Keir insisted it was “in our self-interest” to back Ukraine against Russian President Vladimir Putin because “the future of freedom in Europe is being decided today”.
He said Britain was now “committed to fighting harder globally for our national interests and willing to go deeper to defend them”, as a Putin victory would “affirm our own security, stability and “Prosperity” will suffer.
“So we must continue to support Ukraine and do whatever it takes to defend itself,” he said.
Supporting the Allies was something former prime ministers Clement Attlee and Winston Churchill had done, he said, adding that he remembered the Attlee government of 1945 and its ambition to build a “country fit for heroes”. were thinking
