Faisalabad: Road closures and internet outages have badly affected online business and prices of vegetables and fruits have gone up in Faisalabad.

Courier companies have faced significant challenges in delivering parcels due to blocked routes, while internet outages have hindered online order booking and delivery. This has brought online sales to a near standstill.

Additionally, road closures have affected the supply chain of vegetables and fruits, resulting in a 20-30 percent increase in prices. The Market Committee’s rate list indicates a significant increase in the prices of onion, tomato, potato, bitter gourd, cucumber, cabbage and coriander.

The seminar calls for urgent measures to combat diabetes: Pakistan has alarmingly reached the fourth highest prevalence of diabetes globally, with a staggering 30 million people affected by the disease.

In an awareness seminar organized by the Department of Public Health at Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF), experts highlighted the urgent need for measures to tackle this growing health crisis.

The event, organized on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Rauf Azam and was attended by faculty members, students and healthcare professionals. Dr. Rauf Azam highlighted the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity and a balanced diet, to effectively manage diabetes. He emphasized that diabetes is a lifelong condition that requires constant medical care to avoid complications. Dr. Ali, chief organizer of the seminar, explained that diabetes is caused by insufficient production of insulin, which results in excess sugar in the blood. “Pakistan has a prevalence rate of 19%, with more than 30 million infected. This underscores the urgency of addressing this health crisis,” he said.

Dr. Abid Rasheed, Dean of Medical Sciences, discussed the effects of diabetes on vital organs, particularly the eyes and kidneys, and its association with increased risk of tuberculosis. Dr. Ahmed Shehzad emphasized the need to control diabetes and provide modern health facilities to deal with this disease.

The event ended with the awarding of shields to the participants in appreciation of the efforts being made for diabetes awareness. The awareness walk led by Dr. Rauf Azam was well attended by faculty members including Dr. Faisal Bilal Lodhi, Dr. Badar Bashir, and Dr. Ahmed Shahzad, besides students and representatives of Lyallpur Diabetic Foundation. The event highlighted the urgent need for collective action to address the growing diabetes crisis in Pakistan, focusing on prevention, education and better health resources.
