Republicans say Trump was playing golf when the president-elect called him on the House speaker’s vote to replace Johnson.


Rep. Ralph Norman, RS.C., voted for Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House on Friday, but President-elect Trump Working on his golf game – was able to convince him to change his vote.

Norman was one of three Republicans who initially declined to vote. Mike Johnson keep your character.

Speaking to reporters Friday, Norman said Trump had called him more than once to try to sway his vote for the speaker.

In Trump’s first phone call to Norman, Trump was hitting the links.

“He said, ‘Look, I’m in the middle of a golf game.’ It was the first time I spoke to him.” Norman said, via MediaIte.

“He said, ‘Well, you voted for Nikki Haley.’ I said, ‘Yes sir, I did. Now we are with you.’ And I said, ‘We’ll stick with Mike Johnson.’

Trump owns several golf courses, one of which was the site of one. A second assassination attempt on his life Trump’s USGA handicap was once as low as 2.5 over the summer, and he claims to have recorded eight holes-in-one.

Sources told Fox News Digital that Trump also spoke by phone with Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, in an attempt to sway his vote.

He confirmed to reporters that he had spoken with Trump several times on the phone on Friday.

“I talked to him a couple of times today,” Self said. “We had a lively discussion.”

Rep. Nancy Mays, R-S.C., put Trump in touch with Self and Norman by phone after she voted against Johnson, sources said.

Johnson won the House speakership in the first round of voting, after it initially appeared he might lose.

Self, Norman and Rep. Thomas Massey, R-Ky., each voted for lawmakers other than Johnson, who appeared to be out of the speaker’s reach.

But House leaders did not formally close the vote as they sought a way forward. GOP lawmakers were called to the House floor immediately in preparation for a second vote.

However, that second vote did not happen, and Johnson was sworn in as speaker on Friday afternoon.
