KARACHI: A significant decline has been observed in citizens obtaining driving licenses, with only 280,943 permanent licenses issued in 2024, which is 22,084 less than the previous year in Karachi.
DIG Driving License Branches Iqbal Dara revealed that there was a decrease of 22,084 permanent licenses in 2024 as compared to 2023. Last year 330,027 citizens obtained permanent licenses while only 280,943 licenses have been issued so far this year.
Similarly, learner licenses increased marginally, with 285,384 issued this year compared to 282,385 in 2023. International driving permits issued increased from 22,813 last year to 26,553 in 2024.
In 2024, Sindh’s licensing branches were equipped with CCTV cameras, made “corruption-free” and shifted to online operations.
The system now allows Pakistani citizens to apply for learner licenses worldwide and renew existing licenses online. Additionally, International Driving Permits are now issued throughout Sindh, which was previously limited to the Clifton branch in Karachi.
To address reluctance to obtain a license, the government introduced strict measures, including warnings of vehicle impoundment for unlicensed drivers.
The ultimatum has triggered an unprecedented rush at licensing offices, with the number of applicants doubling within a week. DIG Dara emphasized the need for citizens to adopt modern systems to enhance traffic safety.
