The Prime Minister’s recent decision, directing authorities to set up a new dedicated anti-riot force to deal with future protests, goes against good governance and respect for taxpayers’ money. This is a tried and tested recipe. We currently have many highly trained units mostly engaged in guarding VIPs rather than being deployed on more serious tasks. What is needed is not to add ‘another’ police force but to raise the standards of the existing police force to meet the increasing challenges of law and order. In a world that is aggressively reducing the size and number of government departments and saving every penny, we seem to be doing the exact opposite. This is why we are poor.
