The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has again postponed its nomination announcement in response to the Los Angeles fire. He also canceled his annual luncheon, which was scheduled for February 10.
The organization that hosts the Oscars said on Monday that it will extend the voting period until Friday this time. Nominations will now be announced on January 23rd at 5:30 AM PT. The nominations were initially slated to be unveiled on Friday, but the academy initially announced a delay of a few days last week.
“We are all devastated by the fire’s impact and the profound loss it has caused to so many in our community,” Academy Chief Executive Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang said in a statement.
“Due to the still active fires in the Los Angeles area, we feel it is necessary to extend our voting period and move up our nomination announcement date to allow our members additional time.”
The Academy’s luncheon, where the annual class photo of the year’s nominees is taken, will be canceled for the second time since it was enacted in 1982. (First time in 2021, due to pandemic.) Scheduled for February 18, later rescheduled to an as-yet-undetermined date.
Further, read the statement, “As we want to be sensitive to the infrastructure and accommodation needs of the region in the next few weeks, it is necessary to make some changes in our schedule of events, which I am sure it will be supported by our industry.”
The Oscar telecast will still take place on March 2.
The academy added that it “looks forward to honoring our frontline workers who have helped with the fire, recognizing those affected, and encouraging people to join the academy to help with the relief effort.” “
Separately, the Recording Academy announced Monday that the Grammys will be held as planned on Feb. 2, and that the telecast on CBS will also honor first responders.
