Playback singer Allah Wasai aka Noor Jahan, popularly known as Queen Tarnam in the film world, still enchants even today with the songs he sang in his voice.

More Jahan was born on 21 September 1926 in a middle-class house in Kasur, a small town in Punjab. From time to time, Noor Jahan’s aunt heard the unborn child cry – the music of the child’s cry. Noor Jahan’s parents worked in theatre. Due to the filmy environment at home, Noor Jahan’s childhood inclination towards music made Noor decide to pursue his identity as a bell playback singer. This encouraged Rahul to go ahead and arrange to learn music at home.
Jahan further received his early music education from Kajan Bai and classical music education from Ustad Ghulam Muhammad and Ustad Badi Ghulam Ali Khan. In 1930, Noor Jahan got an opportunity to act in the silent film ‘Hind Ke Tare’ under the banner of Indian Pictures. After some time his family moved from Punjab to Calcutta. During this long period he had the opportunity to act in about 11 silent films, till 1931 and where the child artist made his mark. The film released in 1932 was the first talkie film of Pannu Noorjahan’s cinema career. In this capacity, Noor Jahan acted in some films under the banner of Koh Noor United Artists. He met film producer Pancholi in Kolkata
Pancholi saw Noor Jahan emerging in the film industry and chose him for his new film Gul Bakauli, so Noor Jahan first recorded the song ‘Sala Jawaniyan Mane Aur Panjere De Madham Mein’ for this film. After about three years in Kolkata, more Jahan was returning to Lahore where he met the famous musician GA Chishti who used to give music in stage programs. He said that he offered Noor Jahan to sing on stage, in return Noor Jahan was given seven annas to sing. In 1939, Pancholi became a popular figure in the second film industry after the success of the musical Gul Bakauli. After the success of the Pancholi-produced film Family in 1942, Jahan found his way into the film industry.
The song ‘Kon Si Badli Mein Meera Chand’, filmed on Noorjahan in the film Khandaan, is quite popular among the audience today. After the success of the film Dynasty, Noor Jahan married filmmaker Shaukat Hussain. After that she came to Mumbai. Meanwhile Jahan continued to experiment with his voice in Shaukat Hussain’s failed films Nakar, Jaganu (1943). Because of these qualities, she was called the thumri singing queen. During this period Noor Jahan’s Exports (1943), Doost (1944) and Maa, Village Girl (1945) proved to be successful releases. The magic of his voice in these films impressed the audience. Thus, Noor Jahan started singing in the Mumbai industrial film Malika.
In the year 1945, another film Zeenat also released in Noor Jahan, a Qawwali of this film Aheen Na Bhari Shakwe Na Kya… Kuch Abhi Na Zabaan… gained huge popularity among the audience. Jahan further got an opportunity to act in the 1946 film Anmol Ghari released by producer Mahboob Khan. Jahan Gaya Gaa, Voice De Arhu, Aaj Meri Mohabbate Ke Saare, Jawaan Mohabbate is popular among the audience even today in Zarb of the great composer Naushad.
After the partition of India in 1947, the decision to go further to Pakistan. When film actor Dilip Kumar offered Noor Jahan Saudi Arabia in India, Noor Jahan said – I will go to the place where I was born. After moving to Pakistan, Jahan continued to work in more films. After establishing himself in the Pakistani film industry for about three years, Jahan produced and led to the film Chinaway. The film earned a lot at the box office. After that, the film Dupatta released in the year 1952 broke the box office record of the film Chinaway and the song sung by Noor Jahan in Dupatta became so popular that it became a hit not only across Pakistan but also in India. I was shocked too. From All India Radio to Radio Salon, the magic of Noor Jahan’s voice cast a spell over the audience.
Noor Jahan meanwhile starred in Gulnar (1953), Fateh Khan (1955), Lakht Jagar (1956), Intizar (1956), Anarkali (1958), Pardeesian (1959), Koil (1959) and Mirza Ghalib (1961). Kamara entertained audiences in 1963 and Jahan bid farewell to the acting world, in 1966 Jahan was awarded the Medal of Distinction by the Government of Pakistan. In the year 1982, at the talkie gold jubilee event in India where India was invited, on the demand of the audience, Noor performed the song ‘Avaaz Deon Ki Dunya Meri Jawan Hai’ and felt the pain in every heart. In the Punjabi film ‘Sikhi Badshah’, released in the year 1996, Noor Jahan sang the last song of Dum Da Bhoor. Noor Jahan sang numerous songs in his film career. Besides Hindi films, Noor Jahan also mesmerized the audience in Punjabi, Urdu and Sindhi films. He left this world on December 23, 2000. .
