Ryan Day stepped in for Urban Meyer for a few games in 2018. The mayor decided to part ways with him. State of Ohio After that season, Orr Day became the Buckeyes’ full-time head coach entering the 2019 campaign.
While Day has had some success in subsequent years, most notably the College Football Playoff national championship in January 2021, he has struggled with the biggest game on Ohio State’s schedule.

During his weekly coach’s show, Day discussed the Buckeyes’ painful losses against their top rivals in recent years. At one point, Day equated Michigan’s losses to a death in his family.
“We’ve felt what it’s like not to win a game. And that’s bad.” Day said. “It’s one of the worst things that’s happened to me in my life, quite honestly. Apart from losing my dad and a few other things – it’s quite honestly, for my family, the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. So, we can never do that again, and it’s been happening all season.”
