New Orleans attack: Prince William shocked by ex-nanny’s stepson’s death

The Metropolitan Police have identified Edward Pettyfer as the British national who was killed in New Orleans on January 1.

The Prince of Wales has said he and Catherine are “shocked and saddened” by the death of their former nanny’s stepson Edward Pettyfer, who was killed in the New Orleans attack.

The 31-year-old was among 14 people killed in a car attack on New Year’s Eve.

Her stepmother Alexandra Pettyfer, formerly known as Tiggy Legg-Bourke, looked after Prince William and Prince Harry in the 1990s.

Prince William added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Pettyfer’s family and all the innocent people who have been tragically affected by this horrific attack.”

It comes after a palace source said the King was “deeply saddened” by Charles’ death and has been in touch with Mr Pettyfer’s family.

The January 1 attack saw a 42-year-old US Army veteran drive a pickup truck into a crowd along New Orleans’ famed Bourbon Street before being shot dead by police.

The New Orleans coroner listed Mr. Pettyfer’s initial cause of death as “blunt force injury,” the PA reported.

Paying tribute, Mr Pettyfer’s family described him as “a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend to so many”.

Prince Harry has also been informed but will not comment publicly on the news.

The name of the accused is Shamsuddin Jabbar. He is believed to have acted alone. The FBI called it a “premeditated and malicious act”.

He added that an Islamic State group flag was found inside the vehicle.

According to the police, two improvised explosive devices were also found nearby.

A famous American college football player, young aspiring nurse and Among the victims is the mother of a four-year-old child.

At least 39 people were also injured in the attack, which took place at around 03:15 (09:15 GMT) on Wednesday in the city’s French Quarter – a bustling nightspot among locals and tourists.

Some of the injured have been discharged from hospital – but more than a dozen remain, some of whom are being treated in the ICU.

In a statement, the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office said it was supporting Mr Pettyfer’s family.

Ms Pettyfer joined King Charles’ staff in 1993 when he was Prince of Wales.

After the separation of Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, she became a close companion of the young princes.

Ms Pettyfer often accompanied the two princes on holiday and, after Diana’s death, helped them cope with the loss of their mother.

In 1999, Ms Pettyfer – née Legge-Bourke – married security consultant Charles Pettyfer in a private ceremony in Wales, attended by William and Harry.
