Serving a look in the winter is hard. Not impossible, but it is certainly challenging. How can one look fashion-forward, mysterious, and trendy while bundled up in the quest to not freeze? Living in New York City around this time, puffer coats and snow boots suddenly become the items du jour; Pretty pieces are sacrificed for more practical ones. Can a winter wardrobe ever be both? Chic and cozy? Somehow, yes—at least, in the glamorous world of Victoria Beckham, it can be. Considering her Y2K style, she is totally my seasonal style muse.
Back in the 2000s, Beckham was spotted hitting the slopes in the French Alps on a number of different occasions—and almost two decades later, the looks still feel entirely relevant. Regular snow jackets there are not: Beckham was spotted shredding some snow in colorful Moncler jackets, luxurious fur coats, and gigantic shield shades. It’s après-ski dressing at its finest (only, she took the elevated winter wear to the actual slopes, not just the ritzy chalets).

There is a sense of boldness and, frankly, audacity to Beckham’s winter outfits that I greatly admire. By dressing in the flashiest of winter wears, she proves that fighting the cold doesn’t have to mean putting a damper on your personal style. In fact, layering up can enhance an outfit to a whole other level.
Let’s examine why her looks work so well, though. Really, it all comes down to her flawless accessorizing, leaning heavily on oversized sunglasses or sporty bandeaus to elevate her snowsuits and puffers. (Her hair and glam, meanwhile, are always done.)
Suddenly, my array of puffer coats—which never fail to make me feel like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man—don’t seem so cumbersome to wear. The next time I’m feeling frumpy in my extra-padded coat, I’ll remember to do like Beckham: Throw on a fabulous pair of shades, an extra-shiny lip gloss, and own it. If anyone wants to fly me out to the Alps to rock it on the mountains, that is an added bonus.
