One of India’s longest-serving prime ministers and the first Sikh to hold a powerful post, Manmohan Singh Died on 26 December 2024. He was 92 years old. Former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh was admitted to the emergency department of AIIMS Hospital on Thursday evening. “It is with deep sadness that we report his passing. Former Prime Minister of IndiaDr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92 years. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and suddenly lost consciousness at home on December 26, 2024. He was brought to the medical emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 pm. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 9:51 pm. Kamlad,” an official statement from the hospital read.
He is survived by his wife. Girsharan Cor and three daughters namely: Upinder Singh, Daman Singhand Amrit Singh and their families.
All about Manmohan Singh’s famous family
Born on 26 September 1932 in Gah, West Punjab (now Pakistan), Manmohan Singh was the son of Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur. During the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, Manmohan Singh and his family migrated to independent India. According to Wikipedia, the family first moved to Haldwani, India and a year later moved to Amritsar in Punjab, India. Manmohan Singh studied economics from Punjab University, followed by a doctorate in economics from Cambridge University and Oxford University. He worked for the United Nations from 1966-1969, after which he began his bureaucratic career when Shri Lalit Narayan Mishra hired Singh at the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry, according to Wikipedia. This was the beginning of his illustrious career and the rest, as he says, is history.
In 1958, Manmohan Singh married Girishran Kaur, who became his lifelong companion. Like Singh, his wife Girsharan Kaur was also well-educated as she was a professor of history and a writer.

Manmohan Singh and his wife Girsharan Kaur have three daughters—Upinder Singh, Daman Singh, and Amrit Singh—who are educated like their parents. Here are more details about them:
Upinder Singh Professor of History and Dean of the Faculty at Ashoka University, he is also an author with six books to his credit. She is also the former Head of the Department of History at Delhi University, and has won several awards, including the 2009 Infosys Prize for Social Sciences. Some of his notable books are: ‘Ancient Delhi’ and ‘A History of Ancient and Early Medieval India’.
His other daughter, Daman Singh Studied from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and Institute of Rural Management, Anand, Gujarat (IRMA). He is also a writer and some of his books are novels called ‘The Last Frontier: People’, ‘Forests in Mizoram’, ‘Nine by Nine’. He also wrote a biography of his parents Manmohan Singh and Girishran Kaur titled ‘Fiercely Personal’. Daman Singh is married to Ashok Patnaik, a 1983 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. In 2016, he served as the CEO of the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID).
Meanwhile, the youngest daughter of Manmohan Singh and Girishran Kaur, Amrit Singhis a human rights lawyer and professor at Stanford Law School where she teaches the practice of law. According to reports, she is also the founding executive director of the Rule of Law Impact Lab.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s actions often spoke louder than his words. He was described by The Independent as “one of the world’s most respected leaders” and “a man of extraordinary decency and grace”.
