A vehicle fire and oil spill clean-up has closed the southbound carriageway of the M23 near Gatwick Airport.
A National Highways spokesman said they were alerted to the severe fire at around 05:00 GMT.
He added that the emergency recovery work is expected to continue through the night.
The motorway was fully closed southbound shortly before 16:00, between junction eight for the M25 and junction nine for West Sussex Airport, after the first lane was closed.
The fire was brought under control, but there was “severe damage” to all four lanes of the carriageway, along with a large diesel leak.
Mark Hallett, National Highways operations manager in the South East, advised drivers to avoid the area if possible.
“The spillage has caused significant damage to the entire carriageway which means it is not safe to drive until the resurfacing is completed,” he said.
“We appreciate that this is a direct route to Gatwick Airport and a busy part of the strategic road network and understand the inconvenience and disruption this will cause.
“We are working to reopen the carriageway as soon as possible and thank drivers for their patience and cooperation while these important repairs are carried out.”

National Highways said diversions were in place during the closure, and drivers should allow extra time for travel.
A spokesman for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said: “Three fire engines were dispatched. A small vehicle was on fire.
“Crews brought the fire under control and left the scene around 05:45.
“Highways personnel were also present and the incident remained with them.”
