An expert witness has described criticism of her evidence by Lucy Letby’s lawyers as “unsubstantiated, baseless, false”.
On Monday, the former neonatal nurse’s legal team revealed that he would ask the Court of Appeal. For a quick review of all his beliefs.
They alleged that lead prosecution expert Dr Davy Evans had changed his view about how three children died at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016.
In a statement, Mr Evans said he had received neither formal notice of the announcement nor any correspondence from Letby’s barrister Mark McDonald or his team.
Latby is serving 15 life sentences for killing seven children and attempting to kill seven others between June 2015 and June 2016.
Mr Macdonald told a news conference in London on Monday that Dr Evans had changed his view on infant mortality.
He said: “Remarkably, Dr Evans has now changed his mind on the cause of death for three babies: Baby C, Baby I and Baby P.”
Letby was sentenced in August 2023 Permission to appeal was twice refused. Against his beliefs.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the court had previously rejected Letby’s argument that expert witness evidence presented by the prosecution was “flawed”.
Dr Evans said: “The only appropriate venue to deal with any potential appeal is the relevant court.
“I will be happy to give evidence as usual if required; on oath, subject to cross-examination, and where my evidence is placed in the public domain.”
Dr. Evans highlighted the notes in the three-judge report of the Court of Appeal.
“They supported my evidence,” he said. “They unreservedly supported the decision of the Manchester trial.
“I have not received any information indicating that the judges of the Court of Appeal erred.”
He added that he was “mindful” of two ongoing incidents.
Firstly, the Thirlwall Inquiry, which is examining the circumstances surrounding Latby’s crimes.
Hearings in Liverpool will resume in January, with the results of the public inquiry expected in the autumn of 2025.
Secondly, Cheshire Police revealed earlier this month that detectives had interviewed Letby under caution in prison. Further Child Death Investigations.
Dr Evans said: “I believe we owe it to them to complete their investigation without distraction.”
