Under the expanded playoffs, the five highest-ranked conference champions would receive an automatic bid to the postseason. The four highest-ranked conference champions will receive first-round byes. Saban suggests that this concept may have some unintended consequences.

“By giving conference champions, when they’re not top-ranked teams, a bye … it really affects the path to a championship,” he argued.

“And when you don’t make teams based on season total performance criteria…” he continued. “The number one seed should, technically, have the easiest path to the championship and that’s not really the case when you allow the conference champions to be in the top four when they’re one of the top four teams. Don’t be.”

Last week’s slate of college football games featured several upsets. Alabama lost. As far as Oklahoma, Florida upset Ole Miss, and Auburn knocked off Texas A&M. Alabama, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M will all enter the final week of the regular season with three losses.

Saban argued against rewarding three-loss teams by making the playoffs.

“I think when we boil it down, like right now, it’s hard to credit a team with three losses.” Saban said. “Especially with the kind of loss Ole Miss had and the way Alabama faced some pretty .500 teams, I like to call them, pretty average teams. You’ve got some other teams that they’ve probably played against. Didn’t play the same.

I don’t think a team that hasn’t played in the championship game with two losses should play, especially if they played a good game and it wasn’t a blowout. ”
