Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of US President-elect Donald Trump, announced on Saturday that she will not seek to replace outgoing Senator Marco Rubio.
Rubio was chosen by Trump to serve as Secretary of State. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will choose a replacement for Rubio, who is expected to resign as a senator when Trump takes office on Jan. 20.
There had been speculation that Lara Trump, who served as co-chair of the Republican National Committee in the 2024 election, would replace Rubio in the Senate.
However, in a post on X, Trump said he decided to remove himself from consideration “after incredible thought, consideration and encouragement from many people.”
“I couldn’t be more honored to serve as co-chair of the RNC during one of the most high-stakes elections of my life, and I’m truly grateful for the incredible support the people of our country have shown me. Humbled by the support. State of Florida,” he said.
Trump is married to Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump.
He said he had a “big announcement” to share in January but did not provide details. Trump said he is passionate about public service and looks forward to serving again in the future.
Noting that there was already strong interest from potential candidates, DeSantis said last month that a selection would likely be made by early January.
