16,506 students of Karachi University’s Morning, Evening and Executive Masters in Business Administration programs have not paid arrears of more than Rs 2,101.5 million from 2020 to 2024.
The data on defaulter students does not include research scholars enrolled in MPhil and PhD and other postgraduate programmes. Officials said that this data was shared during a meeting chaired by University of Karachi Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi and attended by Director Evening Prof. Dr. Imran Ahmad Siddiqui, Dean of Faculty of Arts and Social Science Prof. Dr. Shaista. Tabassum, Dean of Faculty Prof. Dr. Shaista Tabassum attended. Science Professor Dr. Musrat Jahan Yusuf, Dean Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Professor Dr. Mohammad Haris Shoaib, Dean Faculty of Islamic Studies Professor Dr. Zahid Ali Zahidi, Student Advisor Dr. Nosheen Raza and Director of Finance Syed Jahanzeb. The meeting was held at the KU VC Secretariat on Wednesday.
The members expressed concern that a huge amount of Rs.2,101,486,351 was still owed by 16,506 defaulting students. He recommended that borrowers should not be allowed to appear in the examinations and their admit cards should not be issued under any circumstances. The meeting also considered the proposal to cancel the enrollment and degrees of defaulter graduate students.
The participants were informed that 22,575 fee vouchers were issued to morning students out of which 13,205 students have paid their fees and the remaining 9,370 students are still in default. More than Rs.1558.87 million was supposed to be collected as fees but more than Rs.567.32 million was paid by the students and more than Rs.991.54 million is yet to be collected. They were told that only 36.39 percent of the total amount of tuition fee was collected from the students.
Members were informed in the briefing that 13,425 fee vouchers were generated for evening program students and 6,543 students have paid their dues while 6,882 students have not paid their fees till date. An amount of over Rs 1,435.04 million was collected as fees by the campus and the collection was over Rs 385.19 million. However, over Rs 1,049.84 million is still pending and only 26.84 per cent of the total fee has been deposited by the students.
It was also informed that 767 fee vouchers were issued to the students enrolled in the EMBA (Weekend) program and 513 students have paid their fees while 254 students are still in default. KU charged over Rs 100.30 million as fees and received over Rs 40.20 million as payment in return, and over Rs 60.10 million is still to be paid by the defaulting students. According to the data provided to the meeting participants, 40.08% of the total fee has been collected so far.
The data shows that a total of 36,767 fee vouchers were generated and 20,261 students paid their fees but still 16,506 students are yet to submit their fees. KU has collected over Rs 3,094.20 million as fees and collected over Rs 992.71 million from students while over Rs 2,101.5 million is yet to be recovered.
In 2024, a total of 2,522 fee vouchers were generated, and 1,541 students paid their fees, while 981 students are still in default, which means 60.10 percent of active students have paid their dues.
In 2023, about 3,912 fee vouchers were issued, 2,071 students paid their fees, 1,840 students were defaulters, i.e. 52.95 percent of students paid their fees. In 2022, about 3,272 fee vouchers were issued, and 1,359 students cleared their payments, indicating that 41.53 percent of students paid their tuition fees.
The meeting was told that in 2021, about 3,231 fee vouchers were issued, 1,260 students paid fees, but 1,971 students were defaulters, meaning only 39 percent of students paid their fees. In 2020, KU issued 338 fee vouchers and 242 students paid their fees, still 96 students are in default, indicating that 71.60 percent of students have paid their dues.
Members were also informed that 151 passed out students received fee vouchers out of which 70 students have paid their dues and 81 ex-students are still defaulters showing that 46.36% of ex-students have paid their fees.
The defaulter students ignored all the opportunities given by the KU administration to clear the pending dues and now it has been decided that the evening program students who have cleared all their dues will get the admit card. will be found and they will be allowed to appear in the examinations.
