Legendary sources
Kumbh Mela originated from the Hindu Mathan Samudra Manthan (churning of the sea).
According to this story, the gods or gods and the anti-gods or asuras together churned the ocean to obtain the nectar of nectar, known as amrita.
It is believed that during this great confusion, a few drops of Amrita fell on the earth at the four holy places namely Prayag, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain.
Religious significance
