ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) – A young man wielding a knife A school in the Croatian capital Zagreb was stormed on Friday, killing a 7-year-old student and injuring three other children and a teacher, officials said.
Authorities said the stabbing happened at 9:50 a.m. at Preco Elementary School in the neighborhood of the same name. They identified the assailant as a 19-year-old boy and said he was taken into custody after injuring himself.

The attacker is a 19-year-old who is a former student of the school and still lives nearby, Interior Minister Devor Bozenovic said. “Eventually he started to injure himself. The police stopped him from committing suicide.”
Buzenovic said that the attacker was already registered as having mental health problems and had already tried to kill himself: “It is difficult to say that this person was mentally balanced.”
Video footage released by Croatian media shows children running from the school building and a medical helicopter landing in the school yard.
Authorities in Zagreb have declared a day of mourning for Saturday. “There are no words to express the grief over this terrible and unimaginable tragedy that shocked us all today,” said President Zoran Milanovic. Milanovich emphasized unity and striving to ensure that schools are safe and carefree places for children.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic told a government meeting that he was “horrified” by the attack and that authorities were still working to determine what happened. Plenkovic said that several children have been taken to different hospitals in Zagreb.
