A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a staff member, believed to be a nurse, was seriously stabbed at a hospital.
The woman, aged in her 50s, was left with life-changing injuries in the attack at Royal Oldham Hospital’s A&E department at around 23:30 GMT on Saturday.
Greater Manchester Police said officers believe he was attacked by a member of the public with a sharp instrument, which was not a knife. She remains in the hospital for treatment.
A 37-year-old man was arrested and remains in police custody.
Det Sgt Craig Rutters appealed for information, adding: “We know news of this nature will come as a shock.
“The local community can expect an increased police presence when we carry out enquiries, but they are also there to provide reassurance and answer any questions you may have.”
Oldham West MP Jim McMahon described the stabbing as a “senseless attack”.
In a social media post, he said: “Our thoughts are with the nurse, family and friends as we seek a full recovery.”
