Katie Piper has decided to get an “artificial eye” 16 years after an acid attack left her severely scarred and permanently scarred.
The TV presenter shared the news on Instagram, saying it was after “several years of battling” with her health.
“I have reached the end. [the] road to some extent, and the decision has been made to try an artificial eye shell,” he wrote.
The former model has undergone hundreds of surgeries to repair damage to her face and eyesight following an attack ordered by her ex-boyfriend, which took place when she was 24.
According to the NHS National Artificial Eye Servicean artificial eye shell – also called a cosmetic shell – is a thin artificial eye that is custom-made for patients.
It is designed to fit a blind and impaired eye.
In her Instagram post, Piper, 41, also shared a video showing her wearing prosthetics.
“This is the beginning of the journey of having an artificial eye, I have an incredible medical team behind me.
“As always I am incredibly grateful to all those in the NHS and private healthcare system for their ability and kindness.
“I’ll be sharing my journey, my hopes and trepidations about being able to afford it and I’d love to hear from any of you in the comments if you’ve been on that journey or have any advice. “
After the attack in 2008, he lost sight in one eye but was restored by doctors at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, West Sussex.
Piper, a mother of two, set up her foundation to make living with burns and wounds easier.
She has previously said that society needs to change to accept people with facial defects.
In 2009, she made a Channel 4 documentary about her experience called Katie: My Beautiful Face.
He was made an OBE in 2021 for his services to charity and victims of burns and other infamous injuries.
