The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has said on Thursday that the current cold weather in Karachi is likely to intensify from January 4 (Saturday).

Although there may be a slight abatement in the prevailing cold today and tomorrow (Friday), westerly winds entering the country may bring rain in Balochistan followed by cold winds in Karachi, the Meteorological Department noted.

Forecasting cold and dry weather in the metropolis, the PMD noted that the city recorded a minimum temperature of 13.5 degrees Celsius with a humidity level of 58 percent and a northerly wind speed of six kilometers per hour. Even the blowing wind.

The weather forecast comes as the mercury has already dipped into single digits several times and the metropolis recorded temperatures of 9.1°C and 9.5°C.

The current cold weather is also accompanied by poor air quality in the city which recorded the highest level of pollution on December 31, 2024 (Tuesday).

The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI), according to Swiss air quality monitor IQAir, was recorded at 237 – a level classified as “extremely unhealthy” by the group.

Meanwhile, the concentration of toxic PM2.5 pollutants – the amount of particulate matter fine enough to enter the bloodstream when inhaled – was measured at 162 µg/m³, 32.4 times higher than World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. is
