Isle of Wight Council has issued statutory closure notices for 5 schools.


Plans to close five primary schools on the Isle of Wight due to falling pupil numbers have moved to the next stage with the publication of statutory closure notices.

Notices for Arreton St George’s CE, Brading CE, Cowes, Oakfield CE and Wroxall primary schools have been published by Isle of Wight Council.

Councilors voted to close Godshill Primary School again on December 12.

The authority is expected to take a final decision on the plans by the end of February or early March.

Five schools may close on August 31, 2025.

Earlier, the council said falling birth rates had left around 1,900 vacancies in mainstream schools by October 2023.

It estimates that by September 2027, the number of surplus places could reach 3,000.

The closure plans have sparked considerable opposition from concerned parents and campaigners.
