Despite never having opened the batting at state level, McSweeney was given the role, especially to face the lethal Jasprit Bumrah. However, the Indian bowler dismissed him four times at an average of 3.75.

If true, dropping 25-year-old McSweeney for failing to handle the best bowlers in the world, while all but one of Australia’s significantly bigger and more experienced top six have similarly lost (minus One Smith score), is a real head scratcher.

George Bailey has completely failed Nathan McSweeney. Forced him into a role he’s completely unsuited for, and immediately cast him aside. The young batsman, who is not a specialist opener, must come to the Test team with six batsmen, as per Australian tradition for 147 years.

There was a lot of disappointment among the Australian selectors.
They have left out Nathan McSweeney but kept Usman Khawaja who has been statistically even worse in this series.
13 years younger than McSweeney.
Australia must make decisions based on the future.

Who is Sam Konstas?
Despite an impressive record, the 19-year-old was initially overlooked for the series. He became the youngest player since Ricky Ponting to score twin centuries in a Sheffield Shield game against South Australia in Sydney last October — 152 and 105.
He even grabbed the attention of many after scoring a PM XI century (107) against India and 88 against Western Australia earlier this month while maintaining an average of 55.83 this season.
If selected to play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Konstas will become the fourth youngest player to debut for Australia in Test cricket. Meanwhile, Josh Inglis and Beau Webster have been retained in the squad as reserve batsmen.
