Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan and South Africa wicketkeeper Henrik Klaasen had a heated verbal exchange during the second ODI in Cape Town on Thursday.
Rizwan’s leadership led Pakistan impressively. 81 run victory2-0 lead in the three-match series.
The clash took place during the 26th over of South Africa’s chase, with the hosts needing 191 runs to win.
Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf bowled a bouncer which Klaasen let go to Rizwan, clearly unnerving the South African wicketkeeper.
Words were exchanged between the two players, which escalated the altercation. The on-field umpire along with former Pakistan captain Babar Azam intervened to defuse the situation before play resumed.
Pakistan set a target of 329 runs thanks to the half-centuries of Babar Azam, Rizwan and all-rounder Kamran Ghulam. In reply, Klassen’s 97 kept South Africa’s hopes alive, but Pakistan’s bowlers, led by paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi, dominated the latter stages of the chase.
Afridi took three wickets in as many overs, Klaasen was the last to be dismissed for 248 runs in the 44th over.
After a 2-1 victory over Australia in November, Pakistan’s victory marked their second consecutive ODI series on foreign soil.
