ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has expressed the possibility of transferring Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to another place due to security or health concerns.
In an interview on Thursday, a senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) leader explained that the decision to hold Khan’s trial in the jail premises was also taken to ensure his security.
“If he is brought to the complex where the anti-terror courts or the high courts are located, it can be very dangerous,” the PMLN leader said, explaining that this is why someone in the jail has been arrested. Did not oppose the trial.
He noted that special arrangements can be made if security or health issues arise. “However, nothing like that has happened yet,” Sanaullah added.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur confirmed Sanaullah’s statement regarding the meeting of the negotiation committee with the founder of PTI.
Gandapur explained that the meeting was delayed due to National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq being out of the country. Now that Sadiq is back, a meeting between Khan and the government’s negotiating committee is expected soon.
He also informed that individual meetings with the founder of PTI are going on.
Also, PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat advised both the government and the PTI to exercise restraint, warning that inflammatory statements could jeopardize the negotiation process.
He stressed that if the committee could not meet Khan, he should be called to maintain the momentum of the talks.
After months of political wrangling, the coalition government and the embattled PTI finally came to the table last month to defuse tensions, with Khan’s founding party initially offering two initial demands: all “political prisoners”; “The release of and judicial investigations into the events of May 9 and November 26.
During the second round of talks chaired by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, PTI’s negotiating team tried to hold frequent meetings with party founder Imran Khan to finalize the “Charter of Demands”.
While the PTI has been quite vocal about its key demands – the release of political prisoners and a judicial inquiry into the May 9, 2023 and November 26 crackdowns – it has put these demands in writing with the government committee. Could not share.
