Illegal gold mining in Ghana soared after global gold prices surged nearly 30 percent this year, despite military operations to clamp down on them.
About 70-80% of small mines in the country are unlicensed, and have produced 1.2 million ounces of gold so far this year.
Also known as galamsi in Ghana, it has become a hot topic ahead of the country’s elections. The BBC’s Daniel Dedzi explains more.
