Either the oil they used was bad or the whole package, because the smell from the container is strong. And not in a charming, more “this rice has gone bad” way. In an attempt to be fair to the conceivable shipping conditions, I purchased a second package and had the same results (although it is likely that they were from the same shipment). I can’t comment on anything else about the Tasty Bite because I couldn’t bring myself to eat it. So, finally it goes.

The rice fluffs up nicely once cooked, but commits the sin of showing that it’s been packed away for a long time when you cut into it. It’s salty and sour and gets really bitter at the end, so it wouldn’t be my pick for a return.

If you’re aiming to plate your food like it was in the 1980s or ’90s, when it was common to sprinkle the edges of plates with parsley and serve rice in molded mounds, this is a great choice. Taste-wise, it’s a little rough. Pre-prepared rice sitting in a cup for who knows how long has a hard time tasting fresh, so that’s a pass from me. The boxed version seems to offer a faster texture that definitely tastes better, but will take longer to prepare.

It reads stale and salty and has a dirty quality right up front, like your tongue is saying “Hello! I’m the rice in the bag! There are also sweet and sour notes that are not enjoyable, so my preference. Might as well leave it on the shelf.

Kroger’s microwave pouches provide a rice that sticks much better than other brands. The taste is pleasant, but the texture is strange. Gloopy and “like mashed potatoes” are descriptions that come to mind. But depending on the intended use, it wouldn’t be a bad choice in a pinch when it comes to taste.

I’m not sure if this orange pouch was the first pouch of rice to be made in 90 seconds, but it was the first that I was aware of. And Original proves it knows what it’s doing. It tastes great with a fork and tastes moist without being too wet or sticky. It also has a hint of heat, without changing the flavor of the rice, thanks to canola or sunflower oil. And with the amount of flavor varieties that the bean offers, you really can’t go wrong.

Trader Joe’s It’s the brand I usually keep around my house, simply because the packages store well in my freezer, reheat well in 3 minutes, and contain only rice in the bag. That said, I didn’t expect him to win.

Tasting 9 other instant rice brands gave me a new appreciation for good ol’ barley. This rice is always quick and tastes beautifully clean. It’s a bit wet from the microwave, but it absorbs very quickly and gifts the rice with an almost juicy quality when you chew it. It’s everything you could want in a rice: great texture, great flavor, and a lovely soft chew that still lets you taste individual grains rather than clumps.
