When JD Vance, a military veteran with a working-class background and a case of impostor syndrome, enrolled at Yale Law School, he probably didn’t think anyone intended to take the heart out of the American presidency. what happen

Many who know him credit his remarkable success to the influence of his wife, Osha Vance, whom he met on an Ivy League campus.

By any measure, 40-year-old JD Vance has had a meteoric rise. In three years’ time, he has gone from a long race for the Senate to becoming the third-youngest vice president in US history.

At his side every step of the way has been his “soul guide,” as he calls his wife, Usha.

The pair were first friends at Yale Law School. Although they shared a reading group and social circle, their backgrounds could not have been more different.

Usha Vance, the 39-year-old daughter of Indian immigrants, grew up in the San Diego suburbs before attending Yale for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Her husband was raised in Middleton, Ohio, to a family with poor Appalachian roots in eastern Kentucky.

Charles Tyler, a Yale classmate and friend of the couple, told the BBC that their contrasting upbringings drew them to each other.

“They were always this match of very different people,” he said.

In his best-selling 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, J.D. Vance recounts how his wife helped him adjust to life at a top law college. of

“I have never felt out of place in my entire life,” he wrote, “but I did at Yale.”

The vice president-elect cites an example in the book where his wife taught him which cutlery to use for which part of a formal meal, picking up silverware outside.

“Usha was teaching JD about the finer points of living at an elite institution,” Tyler recalls. “Usha was his guide throughout the process.”

The book explores her first-hand experience of the poverty and addiction of the rural underclass, offering a glimpse into Vance’s relationship.

When JD Vance was unveiled as Trump’s running mate in July, he had limited name recognition.

He was the junior senator from Ohio, first elected to public office just two years earlier, after spells as a Marine, lawyer and venture capitalist.

She was a highly accomplished lawyer who clerked for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Appeals Court Judge Brett Cavanagh before being appointed by Trump to the highest court in the land.

Usha Vance was a corporate litigator at the leading firm Monger, Tolles & Olson in San Francisco and Washington, D.C., before leaving to help her husband run for vice president.

Family friend and political consultant Jai Chhabria told USA Today that the pair were “a team in every sense of the word”.

“When he goes out and gives a great speech, she gives him advice, and she gives him her opinion, and it’s taken seriously,” Chabria said.

Since her husband became Trump’s running mate, the mother of three has taken a behind-the-scenes role.

Friends say she avoids the headlines in part because of her desire to protect her young children, ages seven, four and three.

During the campaign, Osha made a handful of public remarks, including when she sat down for a Fox News interview and introduced her husband at a party conference.

This speech gave the public perhaps the clearest insight into their marriage.

“It’s safe to say that neither JD nor I expected to find ourselves in this position,” he said.

In that address, Tyler said, she was like a friend he still talks to weekly.

“It feels very consistent with who he is in life,” Tyler said.

From his speech, Americans discovered that J.D. Vance learned, among other things, how to cook Indian dishes that accommodated his wife’s vegetarian diet.

And when it came time to defend her husband, she was ready to do the same.

Last July, J.D. Vance’s previous comments in which he called some Democratic politicians “childless cat ladies” resurfaced on social media, and it was his wife who received damage control. Most of all was done to prevent the impending riot.

She described her remarks as “quiet”, describing them as a reflection of the challenges facing working families in America, and expressed the wish that critics would take the larger perspective of what her husband said. See

She acknowledged in the Fox interview that she did not agree with her husband on all political matters, though she said she never doubted his intentions.

“Usha has never been an overly political figure,” the couple’s former Yale Law School classmate JJ Snydow told the BBC. “America has seen him as a very impressive, safe person. He’s real — that’s who he is.”

Charles Tyler says Usha Vance doesn’t fit neatly into any political box.

“The reason a lot of people have trouble identifying her politics isn’t because she keeps her cards close to the vest,” he says, “it’s because she doesn’t fit into these kinds of ideological tribes. are ones most of us have identified with.”

That will likely serve her well as America’s second lady, a role that has historically been relegated to the cut and thrust of Washington’s partisan politics.

But with JD Vance’s star firmly in the ascendant, few who know the power couple doubt that Usha Vance will continue to serve as their spiritual guide, perhaps one day as First Lady of the United States. But also
