Two to four hours round the greater city.

A city’s grating teams are making two-to-four-hour rounds of its major streets to make sure no ice sticks or icicles form in the winter forecast.

An amber weather warning for snow and ice has been issued by the Met Office for north-west England, meaning “significant disruption” is expected from 21:00 GMT and the alert will remain in place throughout Sunday.

Liverpool’s grating lorries are covering the city’s arterial roads and special quad bikes will be spraying pedestrian areas in the city with a “liquid salt solution”.

The council has warned people who live in streets where there will be no matting to be especially careful.

James McCoy says his team of 14 will work until at least 22:00 GMT.

James McCoy, supervisor of the city council’s Newton Road salt depot, said: “We’re putting the guys out on two runs with 20g (0.7oz) before the snow comes and that will stop it from sticking and icing.”

“What happens on Sunday depends on what we hear from the weather updates,” he said.

Labor councilor Laura Robertson-Collins, cabinet member for neighborhoods and communities, said: “It’s really important that we keep the city moving not just on the roads but on the footpaths where the special quad bikes will be spreading the liquid salt solution.”

He thanked the motivated teams for their perseverance, adding: “It’s a big, big area to cover when you think about the whole city – thank you guys for doing this really hard work. while we are all warm inside our homes.”

The councilor urged people to “please be very careful as there will be areas – such as side streets – that will not be great”.
