Ruth Jones has admitted that when she’s nervous, the TV star tries to be like her Gavin and Stacey character Nessa Jenkins.
“What I love about Nessa is that she doesn’t care what anyone thinks,” Jones told the BBC at the premiere of Gavin & Stacey’s finale.
“I wish I could be something more like her in real life. I just love her directness. If I’m nervous about something, I often channel my inner Nessa to say, ‘Oh, love, back off.’ “
Jones will play Nessa for the last time in the feature length. Gavin and Stacey’s Christmas Day final episode on BBC One at 21:00 GMT.
“I just love playing him, I really do,” added Jones. “I love the history of his life and the things he’s done, which are quite extraordinary.”
Gavin and Stacey debuted on BBC Three in 2007 and co-created the series with James Corden, with Jones playing Nessa ever since.
Nessa – “Ow!”, “What’s going on?” Famous for saying? and “Tidy” – has a number of occupations including a truck driver, BBC producer and goalkeeping coach in Coventry City.
Matthew Horne and Joanna Page play the title roles of Gavin and Stacey – and Page, who plays Nessa’s on-screen best friend, The nerve has been recognized About returning to the iconic character for the final show.
“It was quite difficult at the beginning,” he told the BBC.
“I said to my mum before I started, ‘Oh my God, I played Stacey for the first time when I was 29 – now I’m forty, I’ve got four kids, am I going to be able to play this bubble.’ Will be, the character’s energy and fun again swear?’
“I’m still the same as I was when I was 17, so yeah. There was a little bit of ‘Oh my God, am I going to play it differently?’ But then, my God, meeting the gang, coming back to the set, laughing, and just going back to where we’re all family – it was wonderful.”
The upcoming finale sees Gavin, Stacey, Smithy, and Nessa come together one last time – after 2019 Christmas Special Jones’ character Nessa ends up proposing to Smithy, played by Corden.
“It might sound like complete nonsense, but it doesn’t really feel like we’re in charge of writing it,” Corden said.
“I feel like we just have to be together and we kind of open a portal and the characters come in and they tell us what they want everyone to know.”
