Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special: Did Smithie Say Yes to Nessa?

Gavin and Stacey’s final episode is finally here, with millions of fans tuning in to find out if Smithy said yes.

The hit BBC sitcom ended on an incredible cliffhanger in 2019 when Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, got down on one knee in front of Smithy, played by James Corden, and Asked to marry her.

But what happened next? Did he say yes?

After months of waiting, Gavin and Stacey fans can finally find out, and now the cast has finally opened up about what happens in the final episode.

No – Smithy did not say yes to Nessa. In fact, he didn’t say anything…

Instead, Smithy agrees to marry Sonia – that’s right, his girlfriend (now fiancee) last seen in the 2019 Christmas special, played by Laura Ackman.

“I called Ruth and was like, ‘I wonder if we can make everyone think, for the first six or seven minutes, that it’s just Nessa and Smithy,'” the co-creator said. Going to see the wedding between’, James Corden.

This brilliant twist left everyone thinking Smithy had said yes… just to pull the rug out from under us.

“What was really interesting was, after the 2019 special, all the people would say to us, ‘What does he say?'” Corden said.

“They will never say, ‘Who did he choose?’ I don’t think it was peripheral to people.”

“She was staying at different hotels, she was going places late at night,” said Corden, who explained the secrecy surrounding Aikman’s involvement.

“He didn’t even tell his mom and dad,” added Ruth Jones. “He didn’t even tell them he was in it.”

“It was an incredible performance,” Corden added. “It’s an almost impossible task to have a cartoon in someone else’s hands, and I hope she’s celebrated for what I think is a great performance.”

It seems we will never know what happened on the fishing trip.

“I’d like to say now and forever – the joke has always been that you never know what happens on a fishing trip!” said Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason.

The long-running gag involves an incident between Uncle Brian and Jason many years ago.

Unfortunately, those who hope Finally find out what happened will be disappointed.

“I apologize to everyone,” Wilfort said. “But it’s always been funny and it always will be because it’s funny!” It’s funnier that way. I’m glad we didn’t reveal it because, well, we never know what it is.”

However, there is one other person who knows what happened – Dave Kochs.

“Now that this final, final episode is over, hopefully people will stop asking me,” said Stephen Rhodri, who plays Dave.

Although Dave almost blurts it out during the finale, this is as close as we’re going to get.

“He’ll take that to his grave,” Rhodri added. “That was the chance you were going to hear. And yes, it’s one of those, it’s a great running gag that they’ve made – I love it. It’s perfect that nothing ever got revealed. will go.”

After a bit of a shift throughout the finale, Gwen reveals that she has a boyfriend.

But no one expected him to become Dave Kochs.

“I never thought in a million years it would be Dave Kochs,” said Melanie Walters, who plays Gwen.

“I thought it was going to be one of Doris’ cast-offs,” he added.

“It works, doesn’t it?” Wilfort said. “They make a perfect couple. They do! After the initial shock, they just look great together.”

“You can really see why they’re drawn to each other,” said Rhodri, who plays Dave.

“Well, I don’t know. I can see why Dave would be attracted to Gwen. I don’t know why Gwen would be attracted to Dave.

“He’s probably not an obvious choice, but I think maybe he needs a little excitement in his life. He’s obviously a colorful character, so why not?”

“One of my favorite moments is when Dave is revealed,” added Rhodri.

Obviously, the family is grieving, but Nyssa, who is still there when they come down the stairs, responds in an imaginative Nyssa-like way.

“I loved doing that scene and I thought it was perfect that they all see her and the family, so Jason and Stacey and Brian are obviously angry and they can’t believe it,” Rhodri said. ”

“Then Nessa was just like, ‘Okay, Dave?’ And Dave was just like, ‘Okay, Ness?’ And it’s kind of a natural thing — they both moved on a long time ago, so why not, you know?”

“I don’t know what people’s reactions are going to be, but because Gwen is so straightforward, you know, and someone who’s such a mummy character, I think, hopefully, people are just excited for Gwen. She must be getting a little excited about her life

“And Dave is able to provide that,” added Rhodri.

At the end of the day, when all was said and done, of course he married her.

After ditching Sonya at the altar, Smithy runs off to find Nyssa, but she has already decided to return to the ship to deal with her broken heart.

Nessa is at Southampton Docks about to depart, so Smithy and the rest of the gang sneak into Dave’s coach and ride like the wind.

“It was great – I was so happy,” Rhodri said.

“I mean, it’s always fun to play scenes with James, you know, the relationship between Dave and Smithy, the first time he meets him at the barn dance, you know, and that’s always fun.

“So, now playing it like, ‘You take it,’ you know, it was a lot of fun,” he added.

Thankfully, he makes it there in time, as Nyssa is boarding her ship, and Smithy gets down on one knee and proposes to her. Of course, she (finally) says yes.

In stark contrast to Smithy’s ill-fated marriage with Sonia, the episode ends with Smithy and Neesa’s reception at a local pub.

“It was beautiful because it felt like a real wedding,” Jones said. “Like a real pub reception.”

This final montage was filmed on the very last day of production.

“It was probably the most emotional film set I’ve ever been on and it was kind of amazing,” Corden said.

“A lot of our staff has been with us since the beginning. It’s a fantastic way to close it all out on a Monday in Barrie.”
