According to a Facebook post by the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS), four dolphins were found dead on the coast of Mississippi over the weekend.
The dolphins, identified as pentrochal spotted dolphins, died after becoming stranded on the sand on Pete Bois Island.
The species is rarely seen. Waters of the Mississippi and usually live in deep waters, so IMMS was surprised to find four together on one of the barrier islands.
The United Nations adopted the LANDMARK Convention to protect marine life
Staff responded quickly and collected images and tissue samples before transporting the animals Veterinary team in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University.
The team is working to determine the cause of the dolphin’s death.
