A former city councilor in Brazil has returned a toilet and two sinks he removed from his office after losing his bid for re-election.
Footage of one of Janina Lima’s employees was posted online after her term as a Sao Paulo councilwoman ended.
“I decided to donate the stuff I got from my own resources to the chamber,” he said in a statement on X after backlash on social media.
“Obviously, neither I nor my advisers need a toilet.”
CCTV cameras caught employees in his office removing facilities that he had installed after taking office eight years ago.
In a statement posted on social media, Lima said the bathroom renovations were paid for with her own money and that Therefore, the council has no assets.
Lima said it followed the legal department’s guidance, which indicated that all personally installed resources should be removed.
He told Brazilian media outlet G1 that the hydraulics in the building are “sensitive”.
He added that other fixtures he bought for the office – such as a glass partition and industrial-style light fittings – will remain for his successor.
Lima served as an adviser to the new party until January 1.
The 41-year-old lost her seat in the 2024 election to Brazil’s Labor Party’s Adrilas Jorge.
At his opening on Monday, George told G1 that his team would “use the communal potty” until the situation is resolved.
“I visited the office and thought the architecture was wonderful. But it took everything out,” he said.
They even removed the toilet and sink. He said no [that she was going to take them out]. And that is something neither she will say nor I will ask.”
New House President Ricardo Teixeira said “appropriate measures” would be taken.
