The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park has been postponed on safety grounds due to severe weather caused by a thunderstorm.
An amber weather warning for high winds was issued for Merseyside on Saturday morning amid catastrophic conditions across the UK.
The game was canceled following a meeting between the two clubs and representatives of Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council.
“While we appreciate this will be very disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff and players is of the utmost importance,” Everton said in a statement.
Liverpool said the decision was made “due to the threat to safety in the local area”.
The match was due to kick off at 12:30 GMT and was to be the last league derby between the two teams at Goodison before Everton’s move to their new stadium in 2025.
Liverpool are seven points clear of Chelsea and Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, with both teams playing at Tottenham and Fulham respectively on Sunday.
Sean Dyche’s Everton are 15th in the top flight, five points clear of the relegation places.
Millions of people in Wales and parts of south-west England have been told to stay indoors during the storm.
Forecasters have warned of gusts of up to 90mph in some parts, while the Met Office has issued its highest level red warning to cover areas of west and south Wales – Where tens of thousands of homes are without electricity.
