What is cardiac arrest?
Cardiac arrest is a sudden, life-threatening condition where the heart stops beating effectively, interrupting blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. It occurs when there is a disturbance in the heart’s electrical system, often due to an arrhythmia such as ventricular fibrillation. Symptoms include sudden collapse, loss of consciousness, and lack of pulse or breathing. Cardiac arrest differs from a heart attack, in which blood flow to the heart is blocked.
Cardiac arrest in young adultsAlthough less common than in older populations, there is a growing concern due to various underlying factors. A major cause is undiagnosed heart conditions, eg Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic disorder that thickens the heart muscle, causing electrical instability. Other inherited arrhythmias such as long QT syndrome or Brugada syndrome can also predispose young people to sudden cardiac arrest. Often, these conditions go undiagnosed until a heart attack occurs.
Another important factor is lifestyle and environmental triggers, such as vigorous physical exertion without proper medical evaluation. Competitive sports, for example, can serve as a motivator for people with undiagnosed heart disease. Drug abuse, including recreational drugs such as cocaine or heavy alcohol use, can cause arrhythmias and increase the risk of heart attack.
Stress and lifestyle factors, including poor sleep, unhealthy diet, and chronic stress, can contribute to the early onset of heart conditions. Additionally, untreated infections such as myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) following viral diseases can lead to heart complications.
Raising awareness of preventive measures, routine cardiac screening, and early detection of underlying conditions are essential to reduce the incidence of cardiac arrest in young adults. Prompt access to CPR and defibrillation is also critical to improving survival rates.
